The Tower of Babel: One language, that is to say, one manner of speaking, plus a human response to some notion of the threat of being scattered. God’s creation invites us to be creative in His image, to seek to recover His name (“name” has to do with God’s nature) as our own rather than make a name for ourselves. Here we see the red pyramid thinking of Adam reassert itself even after the example of Cain and the flood, in contrast to the green arc of God’s nature and creation. Human power structures and building programs tend to destroy natural resources and natural relationships between people; dishonesty about dependence does this. Creativity and imagination that is honest about dependence tends and cares for God’s creation even while working with it to restore our lives from the consequences of Adam’s corruption. Similarly, so much wonderful art work preserves for us and inspires us with beauty in God’s created universe.
