The Bible pauses at certain places to give overviews or reviews. Before moving on with Shem’s history, the book of Genesis gives a summary of Noah’s other two sons and their descendants. Egypt is “Mizraim” in Hebrew and also referred to as the land of Ham. The other names of the descendants of Ham are the nations of North Africa and, of course, Canaan is to the north and east of Egypt. The descendants of Japheth migrated toward present-day Europe. Shem’s genealogy is last because his history is where we follow the fulfillment of God’s promise of a savior.
