After the flood, God blesses Noah and his sons. The blessing to be fruitful and multiply, as God did with Adam and Eve, confirms God’s power and will that His creation should support life. God instructs that animals as well as plants are for food; perhaps because in our fallen state we need that option for nutrition and perhaps as a solemn reminder that the corruption of Adam has far reaching effects that bring death rather than life. God’s promise has a physical confirmation in the rainbow.

While Noah found favor with the Lord, Noah was still fully human. Noah planted a vineyard, made wine, and drank too much—but who can blame him? Ham and Canaan were disrespectful of Noah to such a degree that they brought a curse upon themselves. The curse of Ham and Canaan will be evident in Israel’s history to come.
